. Calibre does not natively support .doc/.docx files.
I discovered that. <deep, heavy sigh> I tend to load my favorite stories in MS Word and edit formatting, spelling, and grammar for more comfortable future re-reading. (Just a small, manageable bit of OCD.) That's the version I want to send to my friend.
OTOH, Amazon has a free "Send to Kindle" app. You download it on your computer, right-click on the document, and click on Send to Kindle. The system converts Word docs to .mobi very nicely; it shows up in Kindle (or Kindle app on an iPad) in a proper e-book format.
I was trying to avoid my friend's hubby having to download the app and then sending an emailed Word doc to her kindle account. But if it's him taking a few seconds to click and send, versus me RE-configuring a doc to make it html, he'll just have to suck it up. <g>
Anyway, thanks to you, I now have Calibre configured, so it's ready to go if I ever need it. .

I can change a Word doc to html -- which I explained at length in this old post, if anyone wants the info. But it's time-consuming and somewhat tedious.
